Coaches in The Writers Room Program concentrate on the revision process. A coach does not treat an initial piece of student writing as a final version. Instead, the coach works with the student to find strong points that serve as a basis for a true first draft, which through further revisions becomes a completed composition.
Revision-based writing programs are built on two assumptions:
- The first draft will not be the last draft.
- The changes made will be substantive, not simply corrective.
